Laparoscopic Colon Surgery

Dr. Anthony Vine performs laparoscopic colon surgery to treat conditions including colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, polyps, diverticulitis and bowel obstructions.

  • Colectomy – a procedure in which Dr. Vine laparoscopically removes the diseased segment of the colon and makes a new connection between the two ends of colon. For cancer, we almost never need to do an external ostomy bag.
  • Total Proctocolectomy with Ileal Pouch-Anal Anastomosis – removal of the colon and rectum but not the anus or anal sphincter muscles. The ileum, or last section of the small intestines, is then used to create a J-shaped pouch which acts as an internal pouch for storing waste. There is the occasional need for an external ostomy bag.
  • Total Proctocolectomy with End Ileostomy – minimally invasive removal of the colon, rectum an anus. This is followed by an ileostomy procedure in which the small intestine is passed through a hole created in the abdominal wall, in order for waste to pass through into an external ostomy bag.
  • Intestinal perforation surgery – minimally invasive procedure to repair or remove a damaged section of the intestinal tract
  • Fistula repair or removal – a fistula is an abnormal connection between organs or blood vessels that are normally not attached, possibly caused by cancer, inflammation, surgery, infection or trauma. Dr. Vine is highly successful at removing or repairing fistulas laparoscopically.

Benefits of Laparoscopic Surgery

  • Less invasive – tiny incisions cause minimal damage to surrounding tissue and less blood loss.
  • Minimal pain – smaller wounds mean little discomfort and less anesthesia needed.
  • Barely visible scars – small incisions heal with little to no scarring.
  • Faster recovery – patients heal more quickly than with open surgery, returning to their daily routine sooner.
  • Ambulatory procedure – the majority of patients return home the same day. Occasionally an overnight stay is required.
  • Lower risk of infection – smaller incisions reduce the chance of infection.
  • Greater accuracy – the laparoscope provides a clear, magnified view for precise surgery.
